Bond Construction Projects

School Construction Bond Updates

In February 2026, University Place voters approved a bond measure to replace Sunset Primary School, replace Chambers Primary School, and renovate Curtis High School.  The buildings are more than 50 years old and nearing the end of their useful life. 

New facilities at all three schools will open in Fall 2031. 

Follow along as we make progress on these new school buildings.  

Here are the projects included in our bond:

  • Curtis High School

    Renovate school on its current site to improve security and modernize learning spaces

  • Sunset Primary School

    Replace school with a new building on its current site

  • Chambers Primary

    Replace school with a new building on its current site

  • Improving Recreational Facilities

    Improve playgrounds, fields and other recreational facilities in the district

Renovate Curtis High School

Renovate school on its current site to improve security and modernize learning spaces:

  • Demolish CHS 100, 200, 300 and 400E buildings
  • Connect the CHS 400W and 500 buildings to create a more secure “main building”
  • Build new music classrooms and a Performing Arts Center for music and theater
  • Add modern Career and Technical Education (CTE) classroom spaces
  • Add improved classrooms for Special Education Programs
  • Improve the HVAC system at building 400W
  • Improve access and parking

Timeline Phases

  1. Architect Selection & Pre-design

February to May 2026

  1. Design & Planning

May 2026 to Summer 2028

District team works with architects and contractors to design the building and secure permits. In this phase, the team will gather design input from staff, community, and students.

  1. Construction

Begins Summer 2028

Curtis High School will remain open during construction.

  1. Grand Opening

Fall 2031

Replace Sunset Primary School & Chambers Primary School

Replace each school with a new building on its current site:

  • Create dedicated educational spaces and eliminate portable classrooms
  • Build separate cafeteria and gym spaces
  • Add designated music and special education classrooms
  • Build seismic and energy efficiency systems to current standards
  • Redesign transportation access and parking
  • Modernize plumbing, HVAC, exterior windows and roof

 

Estimated Timelines

  1. Architect Selection

Spring to December 2028

  1. Design & Planning

Fall 2028 to Spring 2030

District team works with architects and contractors to design the building and secure permits. In this phase, the team will gather design input from staff and community members.

  1. Construction

Begins Spring 2030

During construction, students will continue to attend school at the existing buildings.

  1. Grand Opening

Fall 2031

  1. Demolition of Old Sunset & Chambers School Buildings, Final Site Work

Late 2031

 

Note: Timelines are subject to change based on construction schedules.

 

Improving Recreational/Athletic Facilities

Available funding from the bond will be used to improve playgrounds, fields and other recreational facilities in the district. Potential projects include:

  • Field turf
  • Improvements at the Aquatic Center
  • Improved playgrounds
  • Improve other recreational facilities (i.e., tennis courts, baseball/softball fields)

Specific projects will be selected based on community input and identified needs.
