Appeals Process

If a parent/guardian feels the data collected as part of Stage 1 - the Initial Testing and Score Evaluation, and/or Stage 2 - the Final Testing and Score Evaluation does not accurately reflect the student's achievement or ability, the parent/guardian may provide other approved standardized test data for the selection committee to review. These alternative tests must meet standards for reliability and validity similar to those of the tests administered by the district in Stage 1 or Stage 2. Prior to seeking alternative testing outside that offered by UPSD, parents/guardians should contact the Assessment Office for test approval prior to taking alternative tests. UPSD requires the administrator of any alternative test to be a licensed practitioner, but cannot recommend one licensed practitioner over another.

Appealing scores after Stage 1, the Initial Testing and Score Evaluation:The tests evaluated in Stage 1 are math and reading achievement tests. A parent/guardian may provide valid and reliable alternative standardized test data for one or both of these assessments. The identification committee will review appeals for Stage 1 prior to recommending or scheduling any Stage 2 testing.

Mark the date - The identification committee will meet immediately prior to the final Stage 2 testing session of the school year. If the identification committee approves the appeal of Stage 1 score data, parents/guardians should be prepared to have their student test during the final Stage 2 session of the school year.

Two additional Stage 2 dates will be available during the summer break. Results of Stage 1 appeals received after the final Stage 2 session of the school year will be reported within two weeks of their receipt. Results of appeals received after the end of the school year will be reported prior to the next available Stage 2 testing session. Reminder, Stage 2 testing will not be scheduled prior to the notification of results of a Stage 1 appeal.

Appealing scores after Stage 2, the Final Testing and Score Evaluation: The primary test evaluated in Stage 2 is the CogAT abilities test. A parent/guardian may provide valid and reliable alternative standardized ability test data in place of the UPSD chosen assessment. The identification committee will review Stage 2 appeals within two weeks of their receipt. Parents/guardians will be notified of the results by email.
